چکیده

Background acute-on-chronic liver failure is an abrupt deterioration of liver function in patients with preexisting chronic liver disease, usually related to a precipitating events. Aim to determine the prevalence, potential precipitating factors and to analyze the clinical-laboratory profile. Methods A total of 149 patients with liver cirrhosis, all males, with average age of 50.5±9 and the long history (more than 15 years) of excessive alcohol consumption (more than 150-180 g/ethanol/day) were enrolled. The patients were randomly divided into two group according to the presence and absence of acute-on-chronic liver failure. The clinical, laboratory and MELD score were compared between the two groups.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure: recent update

Acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF) was first described in 1995 as a clinical syndrome distinct to classic acute decompensation. Characterized by complications of decompensation, ACLF occurs on a background of chronic liver dysfunction and is associated with high rates of organ failure and significant short-term mortality estimated between 45% and 90%. Despite the clinical relevance of the co...

Acute-on-chronic liver failure: a new syndrome in cirrhosis.

Patients with cirrhosis who are hospitalized for an acute decompensation (AD) and also have organ failure(s) are at high risk of short-term death. These patients have a syndrome called Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF). ACLF is now considered as a new syndrome that it is distinct from "mere" AD not only because of the presence of organ failure(s) and high short-term mortality but also becau...

Acute-on-chronic liver failure: a time to step forward.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is defined as a syndrome characterized by acute deterioration of liver function on a chronic liver disease, associated with extrahepatic organ failure and high short-term mortality (≥ 15%). This concept represents a disruption in the traditional spectrum of liver diseases, particularly in liver cirrhosis. ACLF may appear during liver disease ranging from co...

Acute-on-chronic liver failure: Pathogenesis, prognostic factors and management.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is increasingly recognized as a complex syndrome that is reversible in many cases. It is characterized by an acute deterioration of liver function in the background of a pre-existing chronic liver disease often associated with a high short-term mortality rate. Organ failure (OF) is always associated, and plays a key role in determining the course, and the o...

[Acute on chronic liver failure].

Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF) is a recently introduced term defined as severe acute deterioration of an established liver disease. This entity usually develops after an acute insult. The main clinical manifestations are hepatorenal syndrome, hepatic encephalopathy and organ failure, with a high risk of death in the short term. The true incidence of ACLF remains difficult to determine du...
